How To Dress Up A Scarecrow Doll

OSU scarecrows 2000

It seems each year I get the urge to try something new. I don’t remember what prompted it but decided to try Dressing Scarecrow Dolls! It was so much fun experimenting with different fabrics and adding little touches that gave them personality.

We’re big Ohio State fans in my family, so dressing up my scarecrows in scarlet and gray felt like the perfect way to combine two things I love: Crafting and the Football Season. They became a fun way to celebrate game days while adding a touch of handmade charm to our home décor.

Looking back, I wish I had kept a pair of these dolls for myself, but seeing how much others enjoyed them made it worth it. Like any craft project, there were mistakes at first, but the more I made, the easier (and more fun!) the process became.

Now, I’m excited to share the step-by-step process with you so you can create your own Scarecrow dolls — whether you dress them in team colors, seasonal fabrics, or something entirely unique.

FYI – I do not sew. These were made with fabric glue.

Below, you’ll find instructions for dressing a Scarecrow doll. I’ve included notes on the adjustments I made as I refined the process over time.

ONE - The Scarecrow Doll

Purchase a low cost Scarecrow doll. This doll is 20″ which I bought about 5 years ago.
I found one this year at Hobby Lobby for $7.99 which is also a 20″ doll.

SCARECROW DOLL

TWO - Materials for OSU Dolls

  • Scarecrow doll 20″
  • OSU Fabrics -1/2 yard
  • Black Felt for Pants – 2 squares
  • Black Felt for Skirt – 2 squares
  • Raffia for Hair
  • Loose Fiber Fill
  • Buttons
  • Sharp Fabric Scissors
  • Fabric Glue

THREE - Instructions

  1. Remove all the clothes and the hat from the doll, leaving the feet covering intact.

  2. Cut off the existing clothing to use as a pattern for the new fabric.

  3. Trace the original shirt onto the new fabric, leaving extra room for seams.
(I don’t sew, so I used fabric glue.)

  4. Trace the pants onto felt and shape them onto the doll.

  5. Trace the suspenders onto felt for the skirt.

  6. Wrap felt around the doll to form the skirt.

  7. For the boy’s hat: cut a circle of fabric, stuff it with filling, and gather the edges to create a brim.
